A very mixed week with the start being quite hard going and just two landed from the Spout on Tuesday at 10lb and 4lb on a Ghillie fly size 14. Although there were fish about and conditions were fairly good we couldn't manage to land anything further until Friday when Susie Hill landed her very first fish in the Grey Mare and was a lovely liced 5lb er on a size 12 Cascade and not to be outdone her husband David also landed a liced 5lb er in the Salt Vats again on a size 12 Cascade. Heavy rain on Friday gave us a good rise in levels and by Saturday it was 3' 8" on the Cairnton gauge and carrying a bit of peat stain but dropping steadily. We finished the week on a good note with 5 being landed on Saturday and the largest at 14lb from the Malt Steep on the Middle Blackhall side. Small Cascade tubes and Orange Pot Bellied Pigs did the trick with a couple being liced and the other 3 being very fresh.

This coming week is looking quite promising with the height at 2' 5" at the moment and light to heavy rain forecast most days up to Thursday with Friday and Saturday looking to be the driest of the week.

Last week started off with the river still very low and very warm and not looking very promising but that was going to change with torrential rain on Tuesday night into Wednesday resulting in the river starting to rise and by 7pm was just under 4ft on Cairntons gauge and running quite coloured. By Thursday the river had settled down to 2' 6" and carrying a bit of peat stain making the last 3 days of July a memorable one for Julian Bertie's party with them landing 3 Salmon and 11 Grilse and a fair few lost also but Julian started it off with a lovely 5lb grilse from the Malt Steep. Ally's shrimps, Cascades and Flamethrowers were doing the trick but Nathaniel Jani landed a fresh 4lb grilse on his favourite fly the Junction Shrimp. Digby Taylor had the largest for the week from Glister at 14lb on Saturday and Sam Fox not only landed his first Salmon of his fishing career on Friday, he then went on to land a further 3 the same day with 2 grilse from the Middle Ferroch, 1 from Floating bank and his 4th from Kelpie. Jack Taylor had his personal best at 11lb from the Grey Mare. A fantastic effort all round.

This coming week looks fairly settled with some patchy light rain showers, some cloud with sunny spells.

A very tough week for our anglers with the low clear water, very high water temperatures ranging between 66f & 70f and a few of the anglers suffering with a bit of sleep deprivation due to the hours they were all putting in but needs must as they say. Monday started off fairly promising with a 4lb grilse from the Cottage on an Ally's and quite a few lost between both banks with the usual grilse on for a few minutes before departing company. On Tuesday Mike Richardson had a 4lb grilse in Upper Ferroch on a small Tosh and quite a few were seen lying in certain pools. On Wednesday Chris Notman had a 3lb Sea Trout in the Cottage and that was it until Saturday when a few more were lost but the conditions we were experiencing were as hard as you'll get for Salmon fishing anywhere with the high water temperatures playing the biggest part so we need some cooler daytime/night temperatures and rain soon and plenty of the latter.

This coming week is looking slightly more favourable with some rain forecast along with sunshine and cloud so fingers crossed.

Due to some of our overseas anglers not being able to visit us once again due to Covid travel restrictions we now have 1 week available for 4 rods on Cairnton 23rd to 28th August 2021 at the rate of £91.20 per rod per day inc vat. Last week was a little patchier than expected with the good conditions we experienced. Height wise we were at 1'9" and overcast on Monday with the water gradually dropping away as the hot weather returned and the water temperature started hitting the mid 60sf which was going to slow up the daytime fishing and favour the early mornings and evenings as the week went on. However we finished up with 2 salmon and 11 grilse with all of them being liced or lice just off. Brad Collis's party had a few grilse from the Cairnton bank. Steve Kettlewell had the biggest fish at 9lb from Glister on a 12 Cascade and young Lewis Blair kept up his unblemished record landing a few grilse. The fish landed were caught from both banks with Chris Brynes party having a few from Middle Blackhall and pretty much everything using Cascades, Ally Shrimps and Executioners.

This coming week looks like light cloud and light winds all week with sunny spells and still very warm but maybe an odd bit of drizzle so under the cloud early mornings and evenings will give us the best chance.

This past week was very mixed for us. We had a good fishing height all week with a couple of rises in water levels and the first 3 days produced a few fish with quite a few were lost, mainly fresh Grilse. On Monday and Tuesday we couldn't keep anything on for very long but on Wednesday we landed 4 liced Grilse in the 3lb to 5lb bracket on Ally's Shrimps and Cascades size 12 with the 5lb er being landed by Colin Sewell on his first visit to the beat. The latter half of the week was strangely unproductive and although conditions were very good and there were fish about none were landed apart from a "very nearly" on Saturday. 

There has been a reasonable rise in water today, sitting at 2' 8" and carrying a bit of colour but by tomorrow we should see it dropping and clearing and should give us good fishing this coming week.

The forecast is for sunshine and light rain showers today and tomorrow with a breeze from an easterly direction with Tuesday onwards mainly sunshine and light cloud with a breeze from the west.

This past week was certainly a better one for fishing and conditions. Although some days were fairly warm and humid it didn't seem to be as fierce as the previous week and the water height started off pretty good at 2" on the Cairnton gauge on Monday but it gradually dropped to minus 2 1/2" by Saturday with the water temperature sitting between 56f and 61f in the mornings and rising into the high 60's by afternoons. Martin Thompsons party fishing Middle Blackhall had 3 for the week with several others lost and mainly on small hitched tubes. Over on the Cairnton bank Tim Lawsons party had 6 and 2 sea trout for their week on Executioners, Stoat Tails and small Willie Gunns, so a fair variety of flies and methods.

We could really do with a bit of a rise in water now and this week looks as though it will be warm and showery most days with light to moderate wind from a south easterly direction so we might get a wee freshen up.

We have had a rod cancel unfortunately in week beginning 19th July from a client overseas and therefore we have 1 rod available on Cairnton 19th to 24th July 2021 at the rate of £76.80 per day inc vat. Quite a hard start to the week for us with hot and bright sunny weather and really very quiet on the fish front compared to the previous week with only the odd fish seen. The water temperatures were between 55f and 64f and water levels between 3" and 0" on the Cairnton gauge so a freshen up wouldn't have gone a miss but that wasn't looking very promising although on Friday the weather and water levels took a turn for the better with a rise from 0" up to 2" and much more favorable over head conditions and although none were landed we did see a few more fish about. On Saturday the conditions were pretty good with overcast skies and the water height at 2.5" and the couple of inches rise did pay off with Martin Wilson landing a lovely 11lb fish in Potters on a small black and blue double and then got a 5lb Grilse in the Cottage on a Sunray. Ian Anderson also had a liced Grilse in Glister on a small Sunray. We also lost a few and had quite a few offers throughout the beat.

The week ahead looks to be dry with high pressure dominating and a mix of sunshine and cloud so plan of action will be fairly small flies and floating lines in the early mornings and last thing at night which will hopefully give us the best chance.
