This past week saw the return of Iain Wilsons party to Cairnton & Middle Blackhall and as usual they had a few fish with a combined catch of 5 Salmon, up to 15lb, 8 Grilse, all about the 3lb bracket, and 1 Sea Trout of 3lb. The fish landed were fairly spread throughout the beat on both sides of the river and quite a few others were lost here and there. Successful flies were small Gledswood Blue's, Tosh's and Hitched Sunrays. Water temperatures were varying between 56f to 62f all week with the water height starting off at 6" on Monday and by Saturday down to 3" on the Cairnton gauge. We could certainly do with a freshen up of the water now and today looks as though there's a few showers floating about. It looks to be fairly dry weather on Monday and Tuesday with a band of light rain coming  from the west midweek onwards. Winds will be North Westerly up to midweek then swinging back to South Westerly.

This past week the conditions weren't too bad. We had a bit of cloud and a light breeze most mornings which then got quite bright and fiery by the afternoons. The water levels on the Cairnton gauge were at 1ft on Monday and only dropped a few inches by Saturday with water temperatures varying between 56f to 62f.  On Monday we got off to a good start fairly quickly with Stuart Norris landing a lovely liced 10lb er in Glisters on a Sunray.  On Tuesday Stuart did his same trick again, this time in the Upper Salt Vats on the same fly and was a beautiful 9lb er. Wednesday was a bit quiet with only the odd fish seen. On Thursday Douglas Campbell got off to a great start with a 12lb er from the Floating Bank on a small Pot Bellied Pig on his very first cast which goes to show if your names on it you'll get him. Friday and Saturday were looking promising but we drew a blank. Over the course of the week we lost half a dozen fish annoyingly but it looks like the odd Grilse are now coming through as they were seen the last couple of days of the week which is encouraging.

This coming week looks like a bit cooler and fresher with a bit of light rain possible mid week and winds from the South West

We are fully booked on both banks this coming week but the following week we have 1 rod available on Middle Blackhall Monday 21st to Friday 25th June and then 2 rods available on Middle Blackhall on Saturday 26th June. We also have 3 rods available on Middle Blackhall 5th to 7th July and also 3 rods on Middle Blackhall 22nd to 24th July. We have rods available on Cairnton 12th to 14th August and also 16th to 18th August with further rods available in September and October on both banks. What a week for scorching hot weather. We had daily temperatures ranging from the high teens to over 20 Celsius and not much in the way of cloud cover to speak of. The water height was pretty good all week with it sitting at 2ft with us on Monday and dropping slowly as the week went on with water temperatures sitting about mid 50's Fahrenheit. We did see the odd fish and the odd Sea Trout but they were not very keen on giving us a pull the first half of the week but on Thursday when we did get a short lived bit of cloud in the afternoon, Tim Sparkes managed to hook and land a lovely 9lb er in the Grey Mare on a Kinermony Killer. Tim also managed a not bad selfie as well. On Friday, Andy Ashcroft managed a 9lb er from Rockhead on Middle Blackhall bank on a small Ally's Shrimp. 

This coming week looks a bit better with cloud on most days which should help greatly with winds from south to south west and similar temperatures to last week.

A cold damp start to the week with water and air temperatures a good bit below normal for this time of year and a height of over 4ft and rising, peaking late afternoon at 7'7" on the Cairnton gauge and was fairly coloured but things were going to get better and by Tuesday it had dropped to under 5ft and was clearing. Our first Sea Trout of the season was landed by Jim Ferrie in the Lower Ferroch and was 3lb. The Middle Blackhall rods were very unlucky on Tuesday as although connecting with quite a few fish unfortunately none were landed. Wednesday was better again with Alexis Ward landing her first fly caught Salmon in the Lower Ferroch, a lovely 8lb er on a Cascade tube and husband Barry landed a 7lb er in the Middle Ferroch on a Monkey and Andy Ashcroft had a 10lb er from Malt Steep on Middle Blackhall.  On Thursday, first time visitor to the beat, Mark Riley landed a beautiful liced 15lb er in the Middle Ferroch in the morning and managed a 7lb er from Sandy Bay in the afternoon and both on a Black & Green tube. Grahame Reid also had a 10lb fish from Malt Steep over on Middle Blackhall on a Pot Bellied Pig. Friday felt more like May with a bit of warmth and sunshine and maybe a bit bright but Grahame Reid did it again landing a 15lb er from the Malt Steep on Middle Blackhall. Saturday was surprisingly quiet but Ian Anderson saved the day landing a lovely liced 9lb er in the Grey Mare on a Willie Gunn tube.

The week ahead looks fairly dry with broken cloud and sunshine with the chance of a bit of light rain on Thursday and winds from a South to South Easterly direction.

Cairnton is now fully booked until 31st July when we have 1 rod available, and then we have some rods available during August, September and October so please get your bookings in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. We have 2 rods available on Middle Blackhall on 4th & 5th June, 1 rod on Middle Blackhall 21st to 25th June, 3 rods Middle Blackhall 25th & 26th June with further availability in July, August, September and October.

We are also pleased to be welcoming our first guests into our newly renovated Glenbogle Lodge later today and we will shortly be giving you all a glimpse of inside, so watch this space. The lodge can sleep up to 10 people and is let on a weekly self catering basis with or without fishing. All enquiries for the lodge can be made with Sarah.

A bit of a quiet week for us on the catch front, although we did have some very good conditions on some days apart from Friday when we got another big dirty rise, peaking at over 7ft on the Cairnton gauge which is not what we were needing. There were certainly some fish about but they didn't appear to be hanging about for too long and although we did have a few offers here and there and a couple lost over the week it was Andy Ashcroft who landed two fish on Wednesday afternoon from the Malt Steep on Middle Blackhall bank. An 8lber on an All's Shrimp and a 7lber on a small Willie Gunn tube.

This coming week looks like rain for the first few days with South to South Easterly winds then cloudy for the latter half of the week with winds swinging into a Northerly direction.

Another good week for us on Cairnton & Middle Blackhall with 7 fish landed up to 19lb , our largest of the season so far. On Monday we had a height of 3’3” with good conditions when new visitor to the beat Christopher Jones landed a lovely 8lber in the Old Garden on a Cascade. Another first timer with us on Middle Blackhall but a regular Dee fisher, George Goodchild, landed a beautiful 14lber in the Malt Steep on a Sunray. Tuesday was surprisingly quiet, although it looked promising. On Wednesday it was looking pretty good until some thunder and lightning appeared, along with torrential hail and rain which caused the river to colour up and rise and it peaked at 6  1/2ft by 9pm on the Cairnton gauge. By Thursday the river had settled back to 4’1”and had cleared when Christopher Jones landed his second of the week, a lovely 12lber in the Grey Mare on a Monkey. Greville Cater also had an 8lb fish from the Lower Ferroch on a Cascade tube and connected with another couple. On Friday, Derek Wright landed  a cracking 10lber from Lower Ferroch on a 1” Tosh.  Saturday was looking like the nicest day of the week, with lovely settled conditions and the odd fish showing and a good fish was lost after 10 minutes on Middle Blackhall in the morning but the rest of the day there was not an offer until about 5pm when Derek Wright hooked an extremely strong fish in the Grey Mare and after ¾ hour landed a cracking 19lber on a 1”Black & Silver tube. We ended the day with an 8lber, landed late in the evening in the Malt Steep on a Ally’s Shrimp.

The week ahead looks like some outbreaks of rain most days with a light north to north easterly wind.

Another cold week which was more like early April than the start of May. We had heavy rain, hail showers and a relentless north easterly wind blowing but the occasional bit of sunshine also. Monday started off well with Scott Connachan landing a lovely 9lb fish in Invercannie on an Ice Maiden. Tuesday the water had risen 6" with us and coloured up quite a bit from the previous days rain and was very quiet. Wednesday was looking fairly promising with the river dropping and clearing and the odd fish to be seen but surprisingly not an offer all day. Thursday was a bit more like the thing with 3 fish landed, two by first timers to the Dee. Julian Bertie landed a lovely liced 8lber in the Malt Steep on a Ghillie fly from the Cairnton bank and Digby Taylor landed a 10lb licer in the Malt Steep but from the Middle Blackhall bank on a 1" Cascade. David Adams also had a 10lb licer in the Garden Run on a 1 1/4" Willie Gunn. On Friday David Adams had his second, a liced 10lber from Middle Ferroch on a Monkey. Saturday was a great day for Charlie Robertson on Middle Blackhall with him landing 2 long tailed liced fish, one at 15lb in the Malt Steep and the other a 12lber in Floating Bank and both on a Willie Gunn tube. Despite the conditions it turned out to be a good week for us.

This coming week looks to be a good bit warmer than last with sunshine and blustery showers and winds from the South West.

We have rods available on Middle Blackhall between 17th and 29th May at £68.40 per rod per day inc vat. Get in contact with Sarah to book. Cairnton is fully booked now ( the occasional 1 rod available) until second week in August however we now have 2 rods available for 2 days due to a cancellation from overseas clients 25th & 26th June 2021 at the rate of £104.40 per rod per day inc vat so grab the opportunity while you can.

If you were thinking of coming to see us later in the season please do not leave it too late to book as space is becoming limited. Also speak to Sarah about Glenbogle, our self catering lodge located overlooking the river on the Middle Blackhall side of the water. Week long stays for friends and family (up to 10 people) are available in September, October and beyond. The lodge can be taken with or without fishing.
